November 11th, Veteran’s Day, marked the anniversary of vomFASS’ participation in the International Franchise Associations (IFA) VetFran program, as well as membership in the National Veteran-Owned Business Association (NaVOBA). David Gibson, CEO of vomFASS USA and Vietnam Veteran, is eager to introduce returning military to the benefits of business ownership and offers a substantial franchise fee discount in honor of their service.

Alayne Gardner-Carimi, Franchise Development Manager and navy spouse from 1987 to 1991, said, “Our Veterans are a great group of people to work with.  Military service provides great background experience for franchising, as many candidates are already comfortable with the leadership necessary for running a business, as well as the ability to successfully follow franchise systems and procedures.  We have a lot of interest in vomFASS from our Veterans who are separating from service or returning from overseas. With over 290 vomFASS shops around the world, it’s not uncommon that they visited one of our U.S. or international stores and fell in love with the concept.  This is true in the US and abroad.  Last year I had the pleasure to meet the vomFASS franchise developers in Israel.  Rami Amedy fell in love with the store in Bern while serving as a military attaché and, partnering with another Israeli veteran, brought the concept home to his country.  vomFASS USA has seven veteran franchisees developing eleven stores—not to mention our CEO, David Gibson!”

There are several programs in place to facilitate Veterans getting into business. Patriot Express is a business-financing program, offered by the Small Business Administration (SBA), that offers business counseling and expedited loan processing for Veterans. Another program, offered by the International Franchise Association (IFA), is VetFran, a discount offered by over 450 franchise companies to Veterans that recognizes their service to our country.

The Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative (VetFran Program) was established by Don Dwyer, Dr., founder of the Dwyer Group soon after the Gulf War ended in 1991. The VetFran program is a voluntary effort of International Franchise Association (IFA) member companies to encourage franchise ownership by offering financial incentives to honorably discharged veterans. The Dwyer Group has offered over $1.5 million in discounts to 235 veteran franchise owners.

“One in seven franchises is owned by a vet, according to the International Franchise Association (IFA), and a growing number of franchisors actively recruit for military experience. More than 500 brands are now part of the IFA’s VetFran program, which was started in 2002 to encourage franchisors to incentivize veterans for franchise ownership. Since 2002, they’ve helped more than 4,000 veterans become franchise business owners.” Molly Rowe, Editorial Director, Franchise Business Review.

According to the IFA, buying a franchise significantly reduces risk and minimizes all the hard work of finding a location, negotiating a lease, hiring reliable contractors and doing so quickly within budget. More importantly, it also allows a business start-up to build upon an established, successful system. When you buy a franchise you are buying a complete turnkey business with the training and marketing support of the franchise company and a line of proven products.

vomFASS is serious about its commitment to Veterans, and currently has seven Veterans in their franchisee corps. They have served in all branches of the US military. Dustin Tanski is the owner of the Ft. Collins, Colorado franchise who became interested in culture and food when he served in the military in Washington and Korea. “I love that the one thing all countries have in common is that when you go to visit, they share their food. The love of food is universal. I feel vomFASS brings the love of food from around the globe right home to your table. I think vomFASS will be the most cultural store in Colorado; it has a real international flair,” says Dustin.
Travel and service combine in the military to provide the experience and problem solving background skills for a successful vomFASS franchise. Our veterans have used these qualities to thrive after their military duty.

A breif history of Veteran’s Day

The Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, however, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.” In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Armistice Day was primarily a day set aside to honor veterans of World War I, but in 1954, after World War II had required the greatest mobilization of soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in the Nation’s history; after American forces had fought aggression in Korea, the 83rd Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, the word “Armistice” was replaced with the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Balsamic Whiskey Steak

vomfass2How about cooking for that Vet tonight? This is a great steak recipe, when paired with a crispy salad and baked potato, it’s a yummy way to say “I’m proud of you.”


  • 2 lb. Sirloin Steak, 3″ thick
  • 1 ounce vomFASS Platinum Aceto Balsamico Vinegar
  • 1 ounce vomFASS American Whiskey
  • vomFASS Salt & Pepper


  1. In large sealable plastic bag, add vomFASS Platinum Balsamico Vinegar and vomFASS American Whiskey and mix gently.
  2. Season steak with vomFASS Salt & Pepper.
  3. Add steak, seal bag and marinate for 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 450°.
  5. Remove steak from marinade and pat dry with paper towels.  In large stainless steel skillet, brown on all sides in olive oil.   Place steak, still in skillet, into oven and roast for 15 minutes at 450° for medium rare.
  6. Remove steak from oven and let rest, loosely tented in foil, for 15 minutes.
  7. Slice and serve.
