The Story of Acetaia Bellei Balsamico di Modena

By Toni Jakovec

The cornerstone of vomFASS is the established relationships with the families that produce vomFASS products. The producers of our very popular Aceto Balsamicos, the Bellei family, has been a trusted supplier for over 10 years and has been dedicated to the wonderful and mysterious balsamico craft for generations.

This enduring family tradition has been maintained for centuries. Here is a short recap of the fascinating backstory of this valued vomFASS producer.

The Bellei family has prospered through advantageous relationships with the Marquis of Rangoni as well as the historical feudal lords and nobles of the area. In the archives of the Ravarino municipality, many stories about the family and its noble counterparts are documented. Throughout this colorful history the family of Bellei has made, with great passion and expertise, Aceto Balsamico di Modena. Originally made in a small manufacturing facility, the vinegar was designed and evaluated only by the numerous family members (about 60 people in the early 1900s) to provide the finest of balsamic vinegars.

Over the past 25 years, the production capacity has increased, and through the course of expansion the facilities have been enhanced to produce more than 3,000 barrels of precious wood casks. Storage in these very high quality barrels, for at least 60 days, is one of the basic requirements for the Aceto Balsamico di Modena IGP.

According to a very old tradition, the person responsible for the care of the treasured vinegar barrels is always the female head of the family. The Bellei family are no exception.

Daughter, Mariangela Bellei, today’s owner of the vinegar production, was taught the family business, from a very young age, by her grandmother. Twenty years ago, Mariangela’s enthusiasm for the production of Aceto Balsamico di Modena was so compelling that she decided to champion the family craftsmanship. She oversaw the professional production of the Bellei Aceto Balsamico di Modena and developed the thriving company that it is today. This is an extremely likeable woman with a a positive focus on selling and distribution and, most importantly, a great deal of passion for the traditions of a family business.

Any day you visit Acetaia Bellei, you will always find 88 year old Mario Bellei, Mariangela ‘s father, at the production site. He is not only the heart and soul of the family business, but also the expert on what forms the core of Aceto Balsamic products – the grape. Today he gives his experiences and philosophy, with respect to the quality and genuineness of the raw materials, to Mariangela to further guarantee the consistent quality of their products.

The new generation of Bellei is already starting to become part of the business. Mariangela’s children, Mariangela and Maurizio, are keen to one day continue with the family business.

The impressive business expansion rate has not diminished the family’s resolve and they retain complete management of the company to this day. This family management, in addition to the high quality of the products are important criteria in making the Acetaia Bellei such a good fit as a business partner to vomFASS. For the past decade, we have worked closely with the family. It has been a decade of success based on a trusting and reliable business relationship that will hopefully continue for many years to come.
