Slow Down and Savor the Flavors of vomFASS

Fast food has become a pervasive presence in our lives today.  We all know the down-side this has produced, from childhood obesity to endangering our cultural food traditions.  Social movements, such as the “slow food” proponents, have suggested that there is a better way, and vomFASS is perfectly poised to enhance this new way of thinking about food.  This new lifestyle connects food consumption and preparation to environmental and health concerns.

Although vomFASS products are probably not regional to most of our readers, it is still possible to be an artisanal, sustaining company and keep a low carbon footprint.  How?  There are several ways vomFASS exemplifies the principles of sustainability.

Let’s take a look at the most common tenets of responsible resource stewardship and creating a healthy lifestyle and see how vomFASS addresses these important issues.

Local Resourcing:

Supporting local farmers reduces green-house gases by requiring less fossil fuels to deliver long-distance products to market.  As most of vomFASS’ products come from great distances, it is important to understand how this fits within the responsible resource criteria.  Let’s consider our Calamansi Balsam and Mango Vinegar.  Indigenous to the Philippines, these exotic fruits are grown, harvested and manufactured with local workers and Fair Trade practices.  At first glance, it would appear that the distance precludes sustainability of these products, but on close examination there are more factors to consider.  By and large it is more responsible to grow produce in the climate that it is indigenous to for a number of reasons.  It is far more irresponsible to create a climate that is unnatural to the area.  This climate duplication may require more water and more pesticides to produce the same outcome.  On balance, it is often wiser to transport indigenous plants than to recreate an adaptive environment.

 Artisanal Production:

Family owned and operated production facilities with hands-on quality control at every step are the hallmarks of vomFASS producers.   With careful attention to fruit harvesting and handling, our producers pride themselves in the short line from fruit to bottle to shelf.  More and more vomFASS products are certified organic every day.  This emphasis on reducing and even eliminating pesticides at every juncture reduces our carbon footprint and insures the healthiest products possible.

Being Green:

vomFASS has espoused reuse of their bottles from the start of the franchise, over 20 years ago and customers have overwhelmingly adopted this environmentally sound practice. Rinsing, drying and bringing the vomFASS bottles back to the store for refilling requires a small extra effort by customers, but reaps both environmental and economic benefits.

Reuse of vomFASS bottles is the ideal eco-friendly approach to a sustainable environment.  Whereas recycling is impactful, reuse is preferable.  Recycling breaks down an item into raw materials which requires energy in both the recycle process as well as that required to make it useful again.  vomFASS recognized 20 years ago that reusable bottles were the key to reducing their environmental footprint.

There are several important advantages of reuse over recycling.  Replacing one resuable bottle reduces the number of bottles that need to be manufactured.  There are considerable reductions in disposal needs and costs.  Businesses and consumers benefit economically by the reuse of bottles.  Recycling is the attempt to clean up our mistakes…..reuse avoids them in the first place!

Clear conscious shopping.  A concept that flourishes at vomFASS.
