It was a beautiful weekend in downtown Duluth as Karen Shanks, owner of the first full concept combination vomFASS & VIOLAS’ Spices and Gourmet Foods Franchise, and her team prepped the shop for its official grand opening celebration.  With the soft opening held earlier this year, the store was now running smoothly, the staff was feeling confident and the timing was right for their official ribbon cutting.  Joined by members of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, this would kick off a weekend full of events, tasty treats, special guests and A LOT of customers!!!

“The City of Duluth and Duluth residents have all been very welcoming,” said Shanks.  “They very much support local businesses.  With all of the many events on The Green, we are getting a lot of exposure,” she said.  The Duluth Town Green–which hosts free festivals, concerts, movies and other entertainment provided by the city throughout the year–is just one of the unique aspects that make Duluth a great fit for a shop!

“Duluth is working hard to create a vibrant walk-able downtown with a goal of 2,500 residential units within a 5 to 10 minute walk.  Concentrating that much housing in the core downtown creates a sustainable pattern for merchants to count on for programming the entire day and each day of the week,” explained Chris McGahee, Economic Development Director of the City of Duluth.  “We are also creating housing opportunities for all ages to include multi-family spaces targeted for millennials and active adults, as well as families.  Retail will be able to cater to the needs of nearby residents and the growing visitor population seeking to sample unique restaurant and shopping options.  vomFASS allows the visiting diner or show goer to pop in and purchase a small foot print item and carry that around with them.  Its offerings with such quality and flavor cannot be found anywhere else,” said McGahee.

“The weekend was a huge success.  Shoppers got to experience so many of our products in prepared form.  We had several hundred people visit the shop,”  said Shanks.  This weekend also happened to be The Duluth Spring Arts Festival, which featured up to 125 painters, photographers, sculptors, leather and metalwork, glass blowers, jewelers, and crafters.  The art event took place just steps from the shop and helped drive serious foot traffic to the downtown shopping district.  “Over 250 customers took home some great quality vomFASS or VIOLAS’ product or wine,” she said.

The guest of honor was none other than Viola Fuchs, founder of the German retail franchise concept “VIOLAS’ Spices and Gourmet Foods”, who traveled all the way from her home in Hamburg for the event. VIOLAS’ and vomFASS recently formed a partnership to add her exclusive line of spices to the vomFASS product line as well introduce a new franchise opportunity for entrepreneurs in US market.  Click here to learn more about this concept.

“It such an honor for me to be a part of the grand opening for the first location in the United States,” exclaimed Fuchs when asked about the event.  While at the store, Fuchs lead cooking demos and product tastings, provided valuable hands-on sales training to the staff and spent time introducing customers to her wonderful line of spices and gourmet foods.  “The shop is so pretty and everyone had so much fun–and of course there was so much yummy food,” she said.
