Germany-based oil and vinegar store opens in Hughes Landing in The Woodlands

Vom Fass, which sells oils, vinegars, spirits, spices and more, has opened its first flagship location in the Houston area in Hughes Landing’s Restaurant Row in The Woodlands.

The store, at 1950 Hughes Landing, suite 1800, officially opened its doors on Nov. 19 and will celebrate its grand opening Dec. 2 and 3. The grand opening celebration includes demonstrations, a cocktail party, an ice cream social and a whiskey and tequila tasting.

The Woodlands location of vom Fass is owned and managed by Maria Pimienta, a native of Mexico City and a Woodlands resident for 28 years. She previously worked in corporate gifting for a major construction company, according to a press release.

The name vom Fass means “from the cask” in Germany, and most of the oils, vinegars and spirits in the store can be sampled from the cask before purchase. The Woodlands location is the first vom Fass store in the U.S. with a new black and silver “industrial” background decor for the array of wooden casks.

The company’s oils and vinegars are made in small batches by small local European farms, such as fruit vinegars from the Upper Swabia region of Germany. The flagship location features a variety of spirits, including tequilas, brandies, cognacs, grappas, Irish single malt whiskies, Scotch, absinthes and liqueurs. They come from distilleries in Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, the United States, and other parts of the world.

The first vom Fass store opened in Germany in 1994, though the founder’s family began producing wine and vinegar in the 1840s. The company now has around 300 stores worldwide, including 31 in the U.S. Another Houston location opened in 2014 at 2424 Times Blvd. in Rice Village.

The company’s first U.S. location opened in 2006, and vom Fass USA has landed on Inc. magazine’s annual list of fastest-growing private companies. The company ranked No. 2639 on the 2014 Inc. 5000 list, with 143 percent three-year revenue growth. Vom Fass USA’s 2013 revenue was $3.5 million.

Hughes Landing is a 66-acre mixed-use development that will include several Class A office buildings, shopping, restaurants, hotels, a Whole Foods and a 390-unit upscale multifamily project called One Lake’s Edge. The development was a Houston Business Journal 2016 Landmark Award winner in the Mixed-Use category.

Restaurant Row at Hughes Landing is 100 percent leased. The Blue Fish, California Pizza Kitchen, Del Frisco’s Grille, Escalante’s Fine Tex-Mex, Fogo de Chão, Local Pour Gastropub and Truluck’s Seafood Steak & Crab House are open with patios overlooking the lake.

In March 2015, a Starbucks and a Whole Foods Market opened in Hughes Landing. It was Whole Foods Market Inc.’s first location in The Woodlands.
